This year, we present two shincha: a rich, savory loose leaf shincha from Yame, Fukuoka, Japan and shincha matcha. Our first offering of 2021 has a delicate brininess, syrupy texture, jasmine undertones, and refined, clean umami. A rich sip we wish we could drink all year (alas, shincha is a limited release, seasonal offering!).
Shincha (新茶) is as much a cultural tradition as it is a type of Japanese green tea. Crafted and released before any other tea in Japan, shincha is most often a sencha tea crafted with a very specific flavor profile: verdant, grassy, and reminiscent of the season in which it was harvested. Shincha season is the beaujolais nouveau of the tea industry, and tea drinkers in Japan excitedly wait for its release eaach year. Shincha is produced in limited quantities and only sold in the first few months after harvest.
For those curious to learn more, you'll find an introduction to shincha here.
