This matcha is crafted with a native cultivar known as "phantom white." The leaves are naturally yellow-green in color, rather than the deeply green leaves found in high quality matcha and gyokuro. These leaves are unshaded—technically making it a sencha tea—but the unique cultivar's natural sweetness and umami allows it to be ground and consumed as a matcha. The profile is creamy yet refreshing and has an upfront astringency due to the lack of shading before harvest.
Production of this matcha is extremely limited, as the cultivar's fragility makes it difficult to reliably produce. We welcome you to enjoy it.

This tea comes from Hoshinoseichaen, an esteemed matcha producer in Yame, Fukuoka, Japan that has been perfecting matcha since 1946. A preferred producer by traditional Japanese tea ceremony (chadō), this producer works closely with multiple schools to craft teas that honor flavor and tradition. Hoshinoseichaen holds its matcha to stringent quality standards by ensuring its matcha powder maintains a uniform particle size—a necessary component for creamy, smooth bowls of matcha.
